Abstract

This study identifies the vegetative growth performance and viability of sago seed nursed in a raft soaking technique. Different sucker weights and soaking duration were identified in two different conditions: unshaded and 60%-shaded conditions. The study was conducted from July to October 2019 using a factorial design, with factor A consisting of sucker weight of A1 = < 999 g, A2 = 1000-1999 g, A3= 2000-2999 g, and A4= >3000 g; factor B refers to the soaking duration, consisting of B1 = 4 weeks, B2 = 8 weeks, B3 = 12 weeks, and B4 = 16 weeks. It involved sixteen combinations with three replications.  The result showed that sucker weight of 1000-1999 g, 2000-2999 g, and > 3000 g and soaking duration of 12 and 15 weeks after seeding exhibited better growth performance in terms of the number of initiated rachis, number of primary roots, and higher seed survivability rate. This study presents empirical evidence that the sago seeds in the unshaded condition have a lower mortality rate (14.67%) than in 60%-shaded condition (23.92%). A moderate-to large-sized sucker soaked for 12-16 weeks after seeding may produce ideal sago seeds ready to be moved to the field. The raft soaking technique emerges as valuable information on nursery technology for sago cultivation in Papua, Indonesia.
