The Distribution of Livestock Commodities during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract

Coronavirus disease has a significant impact on the livestock sector. Therefore, this study investigated the distribution of livestock commodities during the COVID-19 pandemic in East Kalimantan Province. Furthermore, a qualitative method was used with a case study design, and the collected data were descriptively analyzed. The period selected was before 2019 and during the COVID-19 pandemic (after March 2020). The results showed that the pandemic has several implications for trading livestock commodities and their products. Additionally, distribution before the outbreak often encountered several constraints related to the length of the distribution chains. This caused increasing prices and became heavier after policy implementation on the restriction of interregional transportation access. This strict transportation restriction causes interruption of the livestock logistic trade and distribution such as feedstuffs, which leads to an increase in production cost and selling price, and disruption in the supply chain from the production center, which results in an imbalance between supply and demand. The critical situation during this pandemic made breeders innovative and change distribution strategies through an online marketing system. This is expected to sustain the business, shorten the distribution chain, and increase profitability.
