Phytoremediation of Ramie (Boehmeria Nivea L.) on Lead (Pb)-Contaminated Soil
Abstract
Phytoremediation is an effective method for removing soil contamination caused by heavy metals, including Pb. Ramie (Boehmeria nivea) is a natural fiber-yielding plant, products from which have high economic value. The study aimed to determine the concentration of Pb in the soil, reduced by ramie plants, the ppm of Pb absorbed by the ramie plants, and the distribution of Pb in different parts of the ramie plants. The research was conducted from January 2018 to February 2019 under greenhouse conditions. The experiment was arranged in a completely randomized design (CRD) with four replications. The treatment is the application of Pb at several concentrations to the soil: 0, 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 ppm. The observed parameters included Pb content in alluvial soil, Pb content after fertilization, Pb content after ramie was planted, the plant height, number of leaves, and Pb content in different parts of the plant. The observation results revealed that ramie plants can reduce the concentration of Pb in the soil by more than 50% and absorb 2-93-ppm Pb in the soil. Ramie which has a TF < 1 is not classified as a hyperaccumulator plant. As a non-food crop, ramie has an opportunity to become a phytoremediator plant. This crop is not only safe for the environment, but also safe for human. Hence, further research needs to conduct under field conditions that are contaminated with lead (Pb).
