Impact of Social Responsibility on Tea Producers’ Decisions in Vietnam

Abstract

Research on the behavior of applying safety production standards such as good agricultural practice was conducted; however, it is limited to the impact of social responsibility awareness on decisions related to the adoption and maintenance of good agricultural practice (GAP) standards, particularly in the context of escalating climate change. This study addresses this gap in research by quantitatively assessing the influence of social responsibility awareness on both the initial adoption and continued adherence to VietGAP practices among farmers in the Northern Midland and Mountainous region of Vietnam. This study uses Probit and Bivariate Probit regression models with a sample size of 443 tea farmers from three provinces (Thainguyen, Phu Tho, Yenbai) in the Northern Midland and Mountainous (NMM) region. The results show that social responsibility awareness has a significant positive impact on the first and the continuing VietGAP adoption by tea-producing farmers. These findings suggest potential solutions to influence the core values of individuals regarding social responsibility awareness, such as through communication strategies or training programs related to sustainable agricultural development. Simultaneously, this study also suggests that the research framework for the farmers’ decision-making process should be augmented with an additional step, focusing on the decision to maintain/continue, rather than being limited to the currently posited four steps in existing theories.
