Sustainability of Regional Leading Plantation Commodities in North Maluku

Abstract

This research aims to identify key factors influencing the successful development of superior plantation commodities in North Maluku. By collecting data from 11 sensitive attributes and discussions with experts, we found that 11 factors had a significant influence: the level of youth awareness, length of profession, capital loans, government subsidies, erosion-resistant plants, water availability, vehicle ownership, infrastructure, relationships of trust and reciprocity, participation and harmony, and security. The analysis reveals that the five main factors that drive success are the level of youth awareness, length of profession, capital loans, erosion-resistant plants, and ownership of transportation. Improving these factors, particularly through government intervention and community involvement, is an entry point for effective planning. Three development scenarios are prepared based on the optimistic, moderate, and pessimistic conditions of these key factors. The optimistic scenario indicates the potential for significant increases in youth interest, farmer welfare, access to capital, awareness of the importance of erosion-fighting crops, and transportation. The moderate scenario depicts a steady but gradual increase, whereas the pessimistic scenario depicts a decline that threatens the sustainability of the plantation sector. This research emphasizes the importance of continued support from the government, community, and private sector to encourage the sustainable development of superior plantation commodities in North Maluku. It is hoped that the findings will become the basis for more effective policymaking in supporting the growth of the regional plantation sector in North Maluku.
