Regenerative Livestock Farming as a Socioeconomic Model for Sustainable Agribusiness in Latin America

Abstract

This study examines the impact of regenerative livestock farming on environmental sustainability, economic profitability, and the quality of life of producers in Latin America. Case studies of livestock systems utilizing regenerative practices such as rotational grazing, silvopastoral systems, and watershed management were selected for analysis between 2015 and 2024. Data was collected through producer interviews, field assessments, and a review of academic literature. The findings indicate significant improvements in environmental sustainability, particularly regarding carbon sequestration, biodiversity, and water quality. These practices contributed to the restoration of degraded ecosystems and the regeneration of vital natural resources. Economically, producers reported reduced operational costs and increased income from healthier products, including organic meat and milk. Many also diversified their income sources, enhancing their economic resilience. In terms of quality of life, producers saw improvements in working conditions, job satisfaction, and access to local markets for certified sustainable products. Despite challenges such as limited financing and cultural resistance to change, the long-term benefits were widely recognized. This study highlights the importance of public policies in supporting the transition to regenerative livestock farming.
